Russian and Belarusian athletes removed from Paralympics – IOPC changed its mind after multiple protests.
Earlier, Russian and Belarusian athletes were given the green light to compete as neutrals at the Paralympic Games in Beijing. This despite the invasion by Russia of Ukraine.
The International Paralympic Committee made the decision Wednesday, 2 March. The IPC Board expressed its concerns and sympathies for Ukrainian athletes and citizens alike.
Russian and Belarusian athletes would have competed under the Paralympic flag. But, medals won not included in the medal table.
A Ukrainian journalist challenged the IPC when he outlined how a Ukrainian Paralympic athlete couldn’t attend because he was killed in the invasion by Russia. The response was not good.
Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games open 4 March and close 13 March.
