SNP Leadership announced – the new leader becomes First Minister
Humza Yousaf wins SNP Leadership contest.
New SNP leader Humza Yousaf says he is a proud Scot and “the luckiest man in the world” to take the helm of a party he has supported all his life.
Mr Yousaf was seen as the “continuity candidate” throughout the campaign. A strong position given Nicola Sturgeon’s enduring popularity with SNP members.
Nicola Sturgeon’s successor as SNP leader and Scottish first minister announced this afternoon following a fiery five-week contest.
It was a three-way battle between Humza Yousaf, Kate Forbes and Ash Regan.
The new first minister will be chosen on Tuesday, when a vote takes place in the Scottish Parliament.
It is said that new new leader will have a big job on their hands.
First – to run the devolved Scottish government.
Second – to try and find a way forward for the independence cause that’s at the heart of the SNP’s identity.
Third – to attempt to find a way to keep all factions of the party happy.
