Nicola Sturgeon resigns – the time is right – watch again

Scotland’s first minister Nicola Sturgeon resigns after eight years.

The First Minister said “the decision to resign was really hard for me,” and “I am a human being as well as a politician”.

Nicola Sturgeon described politics as brutal.  She added time is right to resign.

From the podium Ms Sturgeon added: “My decision comes from a place of duty and love”.

She closed her speech with a heartfelt thank you saying “thank you from the very bottom of my heart.”

Ms Sturgeon held the role since 2014.  She made the announcement during a press conference at her official residence, Bute House, in Edinburgh.

Born in Irvine, North Ayrshire, in 1970, Nicola grew up during what she called “the dark days of the Thatcher era”.

Ms Sturgeon joined the SNP at 16.  Nicola studied law at Glasgow University before working as a lawyer.
