LIVE: Penultimate day of Conservative Party conference
Kemi Badenoch has said she wants to cut inheritance tax if she becomes the next prime minister.
The Tory leader said a future Conservative government would reduce the levy, but added that the party needed to find the money first.
On the penultimate day of the Tory conference in Birmingham, Mrs Badenoch told BBC Breakfast: “People know I want to cut inheritance tax. I’ve given speeches about how it is a bad tax.
“I’ve been particularly influenced by what we’ve seen in the last couple of years, farmers taking their lives… But we have to find the money to pay for it. We can’t cut taxes willy-nilly.”
In April, Labour changed the law to force farmers to pay IHT for the first time. This when they pass on an estate worth £2.5m or more.
Mrs Badenoch refused to be drawn on speculation that she would pledge to cut the tax in her keynote speech on Wednesday morning. Last year, she used her closing address to the Tory faithful to announce that she would abolish stamp duty.
