Rishi Sunak reacts to Supreme Court ruling

The Prime Minister commitment to stopping the boats is “unwavering”.

Rishi Sunak says the government is working on a new treaty with Rwanda. It comes after the government’s asylum seeker plan ruled unlawful.

Sunak also “prepared to change our laws” if necessary.  We will introduce emergency legislation

PM: I will not allow a foreign court to block flights.  Aim for Rwanda flights to take place in spring 2024

Rishi Sunak’s Rwanda plan grounded on Wednesday as the UK’s Supreme Court ruled it unlawful.

The court’s five judges unanimously backed a judgement by the Court of Appeal that the policy was unlawful.  This because of the “real risk” that asylum seekers sent to Rwanda would be returned to their own country.  This where they could face “ill treatment” in breach of their human rights.

The court’s president, Lord Reed said the justices were “unanimously” of the view that the Court of Appeal was “entitled” to reach that view. “Indeed, taken through the evidence ourselves, we agree with their conclusion,” he said.
