Rwanda Supreme Court ruling unlawful
A new Rwanda treaty to pave the way for deportations of asylum seekers from the UK is ruled unlawful. The Supreme Court made the judgement on Wednesday.
The plan designed to deter people crossing in small boats across the Channel.
Once in Rwanda, people could claim asylum there, return home, or seek asylum in a third country – not the UK
But Lord Reed, president of the court, says there is a “real risk” asylum seekers may be sent from Rwanda to the places they fled from.
The Prime Minister responded to the ruling as “not the outcome we wanted.”
Since announced in 2022, the plan thwarted by legal challenges – the High Court ruled it lawful, before the Court of Appeal overturned the decision.
