MPs re-elect Sir Lindsay Hoyle as Speaker of the House

The new Parliament summoned to meet in the House of Commons where MPs signed in and a new speaker elected.  It sits for the first time since the General Election.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer speaks for the first time from the Despatch Box.

He hails the new Parliament as the most diverse in history, noting the election has returned the largest number of LGBT MPs of any legislature in the world.

More than half the new intake completely new to the Commons.  335 could be spotted struggling to find their way around on Monday as they begin life as an MP.

The Commons absolutely packed for the formal reopening and Reform MPs had to stand as proceedings got underway.

Each new MP paired up with a member of the parliamentary staff in a ‘buddy system’ – partly to ensure they don’t lose their way.

MPs received a white enveloped from the Returning Officer as soon as declared the winner at their individual constituency counts.
