LIVE: Bombshell findings of grooming gangs
The ethnicity of people involved in grooming gangs “shied away from” by authorities, according to a new report by Baroness Louise Casey.
It said ethnicity data is not recorded for two-thirds of grooming gang perpetrators, meaning it is not robust enough to support conclusions about offenders at a national level.
The report by Baroness Casey into the abuse carried out by grooming gangs in England and Wales was released today.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced a national grooming gangs inquiry today after Sir Keir Starmer’s U-turn. The Home Secretary addressed Parliament with Baroness Louise Casey’s findings on grooming gangs.
Yvette Cooper apologised to victims as she presented the findings to MPs and announced a new national inquiry into grooming gangs.
Following months of pressure Starmer commissioned Baroness Casey to carry out a rapid audit into the nature and scale of child sexual abuse.
The report looks into the demographics of grooming gangs and their victims, including ethnicity.
Earlier this year, the government dismissed calls for a national inquiry. This on the basis the issue already examined during a lengthy inquiry in 2022.
Shadow home secretary Chris Philp says “crimes were deliberately covered up”, while Labour’s Rotherham MP Sarah Champion says “justice hasn’t been handed out fairly”.
Starmer said he read “every single word” of Baroness Casey’s report and accepted recommendation to launch a national inquiry.
