The National Crime Agency (NCA) and a coalition of international police agencies, including the FBI have disrupted Lockbit a notorious cybercrime website.

The director general of the NCA, Graeme Biggar, announced that an international law enforcement coalition of 10 countries  “hacked the hackers”.  Together, they took down a prolific ransomware site.

Lockbit described as a notorious cybercrime gang that holds it victims’ data to ransom.

The organisation believed to be based in Russia.

The operation was run by Britain’s National Crime Agency, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, Europol and a coalition of international police agencies.

Officials in the United States, where Lockbit has hit more than 1,700 organisations in nearly every industry from financial services and food to schools, transportation and government departments, have described the group as the world’s top ransomware threat.

Criminals use Lockbit to hack into computers belonging to companies and organisations and lock users out until a ransom is paid. They often steal data and threaten to release it.
