Gary Lineker breached the BBC‘s social media rules in tweets about Tory MPs during a row about the government’s Rwanda policy.  The candidate to be corporation chairman believes.

The new BBC Chairman, Samir Shah said “on the face of it” Gary Lineker appears to breach BBC guidelines.

Samir Shah told parliamentary committee he defended the right to freedom of speech but such rows damaged the BBC’s reputation.

He said the sports presenter’s replies on X “seem to breach” rules against attacking individuals.

The former England footballer recently hit back at Grant Shapps.  This after the Defence Secretary questioned whether the Match Of The Day host should express political views.

Lineker among a group of celebrities to sign a letter calling for the Government to scrap its Rwanda scheme and for political leaders to come up with a “fair new plan for refugees”.

A previous Twitter scandal involving Lineker led to the BBC strengthening social media guidelines. It was for staff on issues of impartiality and civility.
