Rishi Sunak – new approach to climate change
In a speech from Downing Street Rishi Sunak announced a delay in the ban on new petrol and diesel cars by 5 years.
Prime Minister described it as a new approach to climate. Sunak said government not watering down climate pledges.
PM says still expects that by 2030 “the vast majority” of cars electric, because of improving technology.
He also says there will be “far more time” to transition from gas boilers to heat pumps. Households would never be forced to rip out their existing boiler to replace it with a heat pump.
The PM says he is still committed to reaching net zero by 2050 – but in a “more proportionate way”.
