King Charles opens Commonwealth Games
The King, there with the Queen, hailed the Commonwealth as a “unique and extraordinary family of nations” and talked about how the baton also carried a message about the need to end plastic pollution of oceans and rivers.
He said Glasgow welcomes the Games and all involved with “warm hearts and open arms”.
More than 3000 athletes from 74 nations and territories will compete for 215 gold medals across 10 sports over 10 days.
Glasgow hosts a slimmed-down version of the Commonwealth Games as athletes from 74 nations and territories compete for gold in the Scottish city.
Among the packed stadium was the new Prime Minister Andy Burnham with his wife .
The 23rd Commonwealth Games is officially open.
The 10-sport programme, including six Para sports, will feature athletics, gymnastics, cycling and swimming – and will take place across four Glasgow venues.
