PMQs – Mandelson lied repeatedly to PM
PM: Mandelson lied repeatedly and I regret appointing him as US ambassador / Mandelson betrayed our country and our parliament.
The PM also says he will release all material relating to Lord Mandelson’s appointment as ambassador, barring national security exemptions.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer faces questions over his decision to appoint Peter Mandelson as US ambassador in 2024.
PM says new revelations are “beyond infuriating” that Mandelson “lied repeatedly” about his relationship with Epstein, and that he regrets appointing him.
The Conservatives aim to force the government to release all papers relating to how Mandelson got the Washington job . This as Starmer faces MPs for prime minister’s questions today.
Mandelson’s appointment was initially viewed by Starmer as a success. He helped broker a trade deal between Britain and the US, a technology partnership and helped sell a highly sensitive deal to ced sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to a sceptical US administration.
For a prime minister fast running out of time, a criminal investigation into Mandelson is the last thing that he needs.
