LIVE: King Charles Second British Monarch to open Canada’s Parliament, Ottawa.

King:  Canada faces “unprecedented” challenges. The crown represents stability and continuity.  Canada faces a critical moment. Canada and United States building up a relationship rooted mutual respect and founded on common interests

The King makes history when he becomes the second British monarch to give the address at the state opening of the Canadian parliament.

He delivers the Throne speech last read by a head of state – Queen Elizabeth II – in 1977.

The Throne Speech opens every new session of parliament.   It also introduces the government’s direction and goals. It’s usually delivered by Canada’s governor general.

On arrival the King and Queen greeted with shouts of “welcome home” as they shook hands in Ottawa.  This at the start of a whirlwind two-day visit to Canada amid its tensions with the United States.

The inference was clear: no matter what they’re called in Britain, here they are the King and Queen of Canada.

Last week the King visited Canada House in Trafalgar Square.  Ralph Goodale, the high commissioner for Canada in the UK, told Charles: “Your dear mother, Queen Elizabeth II, often said to the delight of Canadians that a journey to Canada felt like coming home. We hope that you feel exactly the same way.”
