Zelensky clashes with Trump – in the Oval Office

US scraps minerals deal and considers freezing aid after White House shouting match in which the president accused counterpart of being ungrateful and ‘not ready for peace’.

During the fiery exchange, the US president, Donald Trump, told his Ukrainian counterpart to be “thankful” and accused him of “gambling with World War Three”.

Ukraine wants Trump to be “more on our side” than in the middle of negotiations.

“Russia brought this war to our country, and they are not right,” he says. “They didn’t respect our territorial integrity.”

Later Trump says that to resume talks Zelensky must say he wants peace. He also claims that Zelensky wants to come back to the White House “right now” but that is not convenient for Trump.

He adds that a ceasefire could take place “immediately”.

“We’re not going to keep fighting, were going to get the war done or let them go and see what happens, let them fight it out,” the president tells reporters.

“The prime minister has tonight spoken to both President Trump and President Zelensky.
