NASA launches the Europa Clipper spacecraft to explore Europa, an ocean moon orbiting Jupiter. Perfect weather for launch.
Europa Clipper’s launch Monday, Oct. 14, 2024. The spacecraft, the largest NASA has ever built for a planetary mission, launches on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
On board a sophisticated suite of scientific tools. Also a plate attached on the spacecraft with 2.6 million signatures. They were etched onto the plate in nano style. The plate is described as ‘message in a bottle’.
This the first mission designed to conduct a detailed study of Jupiter’s moon Europa. There’s scientific evidence that the ingredients for life may exist on Europa right now. The spacecraft will travel 1.8 billion miles (2.9 billion km) to reach Jupiter in April 2030. It will orbit Jupiter, and conduct 49 close flybys of Europa.
Europa one of the most promising places in our solar system to find an environment suitable for life beyond Earth. Evidence suggests that the ocean beneath Europa’s icy surface could contain the ingredients for life — water, the right chemistry, and energy. While Europa Clipper not a life-detection mission, it will answer key questions about the moon’s potential habitability.
