Sunak faces Starmer as Tory MP defects to Labour
Rishi Sunak faced Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer just days after the local elections and minutes after Natalie Elphicke MP for Dover defected to Labour.
Minutes before PMQs Natalie Elphicke said: “under Rishi Sunak the Conservatives have become a byqord for incompetence and division.
She added: “From small boats to biosecurity, Rishi Sunak’s government s failing to keep our borders safe and secure.”
The debate soon turned to the boat people.
Starmer points out up to 2.400 small boat crossings in the past 16 days.
He puts to Sunak that the government’s plan is not a deterrence, but an amnesty.
Sunak says since he became prime minister small boat crossings “are down by a third”.
The prime minister says that’s due to a number of factors, including the deportation of 20,000 people and the processing of more claims.
“When it comes to border control, there’s crucial difference between us. We want to secure borders, he is happy with open borders,” Sunak says.
Watch the exchange between the two leaders following the defection.
Defections are a shock for Westminster.
Another Conservative MP givng up on the Conservatives and crossing the floor to Labout.
Defections don’t happen very often. Or at least they don’t in normal times. But barely days after Dan Poulter, a former Tory Minister, switched to Labour, now Natalie Elphick has too.
