PMQs LIVE: Keir Starmer faces MPs after Olly Robbins’ Mandelson evidence
PM: Vetting after appointment normal process / should have been informed about failed vetting
Badenoch: “take responsibility and go” / asks whether the PM stands by a previous statement to Parliament that due process was folowed in Mandelson’s appointment. PM responds: Yes, I do.
PM also asked whether Downing Streetmconsidered giving a diplomatic job to his former communications chief Matthew Doyle. Starmer says there are often conversations when people leave roles.
Keir Starmer faced parliament following the information that former Foreign Office boss gave evidence on the Peter Mandelson vetting row.
Olly Robbins, who was recently sacked, told MPs that No 10 had put “constant pressure” on his department over Mandelson.
He also said Downing Street had taken a “dismissive attitude” to vetting – the government has denied the claims, saying it was reasonable to ask for updates on Mandelson’s appointment
Could this be the beginning of the end for Keir Starmer? But some say he may survive because there is no obvious alternative. And it seems there are still some labour MPs who are quietly loyal.
