New IOC President shares Olympic vision – ambitious plans
New IOC President shares Olympic vision
From 23 June Kirsty Coventry takes leadership of the International Olympic Committee. Watch as she describes the role as ‘crazy’ but also wonderful.
Kirsty Coventry creates history by becoming the first female, and first African, to lead the International Olympic Committee.
She was elected the 10th President of the organisation at the 144th IOC Session in Costa Navarino, Greece, in March. Kirsty succeeds Thomas Bach who has served as President since 2013.
There are big plans for the IOC, building on the organisation’s long history of improving society through sport.
Coventry was only the second woman ever to run for the post, and prevailed over six other candidates in the round with 49 out of 97 votes.
The 41-year-old Zimbabwean competed as a swimmer in fie Olympic Games from Sydney 2000. Coventry won seven medals, including two gold, making her Africa’s most decorated Olympian.
Kirsty Coventry joined the IOC in 2013 as an athlete member.
