IOC: no medal ceremony for figure skating – after Russian skater allowed to compete

IOC: no medal ceremony for figure skating

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board has decided no medal ceremonies to take place following CAS decision on the case of ROC skater Kamila Valieva.

Russia’s Kamila Valieva can compete again at the Winter Olympics, Beijing 2022.  The sport’s highest court ruled “exceptional circumstances” and the 15-year-old Russian figure skater should not provisionally suspended for a failed drugs test.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) pointed to age and issues around timing of the test result announcement in the reasons for its ruling.

But critics have questioned why an athlete who has failed a drugs test is being allowed to compete on the world’s biggest stage.

IOC: the management of the case following the positive A-sample is not concluded. Only after due process is followed can it be established whether Ms Valieva infringed the World Anti-Doping Code (WADC).  If so, the skater would have to be sanctioned.

For these reasons no flower of medal ceremonies for the ice skating events will take place.

Valieva, who returned a positive test for angina-prevention drug trimetazidine on 25 December last year, had been provisionally suspended on 8 February but challenged the decision and the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (Rusada) lifted the ban the next day.
