Starmer US tariffs – important to work with US and Europe
Attending a NATO meeting Sir Keir Starmer said it is ‘really important’ for UK to work with US and Europe.
US President Donald Trump set the ball in motion when he announced tariff charges with Canada and Mexico, then Europe.
But Trump said it could be different for the UK.
Talking to journalists at the NATO summit the Prime Minister said it is vital that the UK works with woth the United States and Europe.
On the question, firstly of tariffs, obviously, it’s early days, and I think what’s really important is open and strong trading relations, and that’s been the basis of my discussions with President Trump.
And I know that intense US-EU discussions are planned.
Starmer also said the UK has a huge amount of trade with both the US and the EU. He also played down significance of Trump’s tarrif announcements, saying it is ‘early days’ and ope trade important.
The Prime Minister also said that the Ukraine war had led to Nato becoming “stronger and bigger”.
