LIVE: Rachel Reeves: economic growth – won’t come without a fight
LIVE: Rachel Reeves: economic growth
Chancellor Rachel Reeves delivers a major speech on her plans to grow the economy, days after hinting the government would support a third runway at Heathrow Airport.
Reeves: “Determined to make Britain the best country in the world to invest”.
The Chancellor then announced the Government backs third runway at Heathrow airport.
Also the Government plans to “go further and faster to kick start economic growth and make working people better off”.
Reeves sets out several projects aimed at boosting growth – which “will not come without a fight”. Also focuses on development between Oxford and Cambridge to create a “Silicon Valley of Europe”.
“Growth” is the buzz word being used by the government today.
Economic growth typically refers to the size and health of a country’s economy. It is the total value of goods and services being produced.
The economy remains sluggish with GDP growth of just 0.1% in November – while businesses have warned of the impact of upcoming tax rises in April, including a hike in National Insurance.
The big test of Reeves’s speech today is what it means for growth.
