Axel Rudakubana sentenced to 52 years in prison for the murder of three girls in Southport last July, and the attempted murder of 10 other people.

The sentencing hearing at Liverpool Crown Court heard how Rudakubana carried out a “pre-meditated, planned knife attack .  This on multiple victims, principally young girls, intending to kill them”.

Justice Goose confirmed the offences did not reach the legal definition of terrorism.  This because he did not kill to further a political, religious or ideological cause.

However, he told the packed courtroom that whether the “motivation was terrorism or not misses the point”.

“What he did on 29 July last year caused such shock and revulsion to the whole nation, that it must be viewed as being at the extreme level of crime”, the judge said.

Rudakubana told police “I’m glad they’re dead” after killing three girls at a Southport dance class.

Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, Bebe King, six, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, died following the attack at a Taylor Swift-themed class on July 29.

Bebe King 6, the youngest of the three.  The family said “no words can describe the devastation”.

Elsie Dot Stancombe 7 at the time.  Her school described Elsie as “one of a kind.

Parents of Alice Da Silva Aguiar 9, said she was “our princess and no one would change that”.

The families of some of the children attacked by Axel Rudakubana are present, and there are rows of journalists.

Prosecution

Prosecutor Deanna Heer KC said: “His only purpose was to kill, and he targeted the youngest, most vulnerable in order to spread the greatest level of fear and outrage, which he succeeded in doing.

“Whilst under arrest at the police station after the incident, Axel Rudakubana was heard to say, “It’s a good thing those children are dead… I’m so glad… so happy’.”

Rudakubana was also ordered to leave the dock today as he shouted: “It’s not my fault, I feel ill” and “don’t continue” during sentencing.

One family member of the victims shouted “coward” as officers took him out of court, while other relatives shook their heads.
