Foreign Secretary statement on Syria – Assad a ‘monster’
David Lammy, the Foreign Secretary, delivered a statement in the House of Commons this afternoon on Syria.
He told the chamber that the Home Office is pausing decisions on Syrian asylum claims while the current situation is assessed. Lammy said the government not re-engage with Syria. Referred to fall of Assad ‘s murderous regime and labeled him a ‘monster’. Also a dictator, and used chemical weapons against the Syrian people.
It follows Bashar al Assad being granted asylum in Russia. This after rebel forces captured the capital Damascus in a shock offensive – which Moscow said had “surprised” them.
The UK government could remove Islamist militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham from the list of banned terrorist groups. This after the rebels led the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad in Syria.
Syrians are celebrating the demise of Bashar al-Assad’s government after 13 years of civil war sparked by the president’s violent crackdown on pro-democracy protesters following the Arab Spring.
