Rachel Reeves – ‘no return to austerity’ – tough decisions needed
Chancellor Rachel Reeves said she inherited a £22bn “black hole” in the public finances, meaning some “difficult choices” were needed.
She told conference in Liverpool that she stood by cuts to winter fuel payments for pensioners and that hard but fair choices needed.
Earlier, shadow Treasury minister Gareth Davies says he “questions the validity” of that claim. He says that cutting winter fuel payments was, in fact, a “political choice”.
Rachel Reeves hailed Britain’s “immense” potential on Monday but warned that the nation faced economic “ruin” unless it balanced the books first.
Reeves says she has “never been more optimistic about our country’s fortunes”, adding that Labour will govern “as a pro-business party”.
In the chancellor’s speech to Labour’s conference in Liverpool on Monday, she also warned of the need to make “tough choices” in the budget next month. This with the prospect of further tax rises and spending cuts as she seeks to fill what she claims is a £22 billion black hole in the public finances.
A protester opposed to arms sales to Israel disrupted the Chancellor’s speech as she set out Labour’s plans for the UK economy. He was ejected from the conference hall.
