The former chairman of the Post Office, Henry Staunton, and the campaigner Alan Bates give evidence to MPs about the Horizon scandal.

Staunton – he’s a victim of a “smear campaign’>

Alan Bates – tells the government he wants the scheme speeded up: “Just get on and pay people”.

Bates also questions the term “compensation” – “It’s financial redress. This is money these people are actually owed”.  “Post Office should be sold to Amazon for a £1.”

Senior Post Office figures are being questioned by the Business Committee at the House of Commons.  This is about why hundreds of sub-postmasters are still waiting for compensation. Follow here for live updates.

The legislation will account for prosecutions carried out by the Post Office and the Crown Prosecution Service.  But will exclude prosecutions carried out by the Department of Work and Pensions.

Before Bates appeared, a Department for Business official told MPs the total compensation bill will exceed the £1 billion currently set aside.
