New figures out April 16 2014 are shocking and show that record numbers of people rely on handouts. The Food Bank charity says it has handed out 913,000 food parcels in the past year. The situation has changed little in 2019.
The Trussell Trust said a third were given to repeat visitors. But that there was a “shocking” 51% rise in clients to established food banks. It said benefit payment delays were the main cause
The government said there was no evidence of a link between welfare reforms and the use of food banks.
However, the Trussell Trust, the largest food bank provider in the UK, said benefits payments had been a particular problem since welfare changes were introduced just over a year ago.
Rise in food banks
Welfare cuts and economic downturn have sent soaring numbers of people to soup kitchens and food banks across Europe. Another charity Citizens Advice says there was an alarming 73% rise in food banks inquiries in 2013.
Emergency food
The Trussell Trust, which runs food banks across the country have regularly warned that the number of people who have been given emergency food has risen since the charity began in 2000.
Hidden hunger
A warning signal from the Charity went out to UK politicians last year alerting them that many in the country are poor and hungry. The Charity, based in Salisbury, heads the nations Food Banks project that is feeding what has become known as the growing epidemic of hidden hunger that exists within communities.
