Gun smuggling into the UK has risen.  Britain’s most senior police officer said more guns are being seized in cities across Britain than ever before.  The increase is coming mainly from eastern Europe

Metropolitan Police commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe told a hearing at London’s City Hall, that in 2015 his force seized a record 714 firearms.  That is around two per day. The figures have shocked many.

Sir Bernard pointed out that because more weapons are coming into the country they were contributing to the rise in gun crime in the capital and other parts of the country.

Main supply routes into the UK are across the continent from Eastern European countries. The Police Chief said supplies are coming in from Albania and Lithuania.

The police chief said tackling the crime is difficult despite support from the countries of origin.

Officers are also monitoring potential supply routes from the US, as well as the parcel post.  Military supplies and licensed dealers are also being checked out.
