LIVE: Wes Streeting Resigns as Health Secretary – lost confidence in leadership
Health Secretary Wes Streeting has resigned from Keir Starmer’s government, saying he has “lost confidence” in his leadership
In a letter to the prime minister, which Streeting published online, he says “where we need vision, we have a vacuum. Where we need direction, we have drift”
He tells Starmer “it is now clear that you will not lead the Labour Party into the next general election”, and says what comes next should be “a battle of ideas… It needs to be broad, and it needs the best possible field of candidates”
Sir Keir has managed to cling on to power and see off an immediate threat to his leadership in the last few days. This despite the resignation of four ministers, some of whom are close to Mr Streeting, and at least 86 MPs demanding PM stands down.
But the PM is battling to save his job. This after four ministers quit and dozens of Labour MPs urged him to resign after last week’s heavy election losses
