David Lammy grilled on ‘released in error’ prisoners
David Lammy, in Parliament in place of Keir Starmer as the prime minister in Brazil for COP30. He was grilled on ‘released in error’ prisoners. The 24-year-old Algerian man mistakenly released from prison in London, the Met Police say.
The news broke after shadow Defence Secretary, James Cartlidge pressed Deputy PM David Lammy in the Commons on whether any asylum seekers had been mistakenly released since Hadush Kebatu last month.
Lammy did not answer, saying a review by Dame Lynne Owens is under way, but said he has put the “toughest ever” checks on prisoner release since Kebatu was wrongly freed.
Kebatu, from Ethiopia, was originally jailed for sex offences in Epping this summer.
He was caught in London after being accidentally released from HMP Chelmsford, and has now been deported.
