King pays tribute to ‘vital’ role of local journalists
The King and Queen host 400 guests from a wide range of media organisations across the country, for a reception at Buckingham Palace, demonstrating Their Majesties’ support for local journalism in the UK.
Local reporters, editors, technical operators and presenters attended the event Wednesday.
Charles was welcomed by Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy and a gathering of leading media professionals, including Tony James, 89, thought to be the UK’s oldest working journalist.
His Majesty praised the efforts of journalists, including a number from Northern Ireland who attended the event, to unify communities during challenging times.
Veteran local news reporters used the royal reception to make the case to the King for regional journalism’s survival.
Figures show around 300 local titles have closed since 2005.
Charles an Honorary Life Member of the London Press Club since 1978. Camilla is patron of The Journalists’ Charity as well as the The Guild of St Bride’s, based at St Bride’s Church on Fleet Street and is otherwise known as the journalists’ church.
