The third and final film in Pablo Larraín’s so-called “Lady with Heels” trilogy of female-led biopics, following Jackie (2016) and Spencer (2021).

Aristotle Onassis, longtime companion of Maria Callas, later married former First Lady Jackie Kennedy. Kennedy was the subject of an earlier Pablo Larraín biopic, 2016’s Jackie starring Natalie Portman in the titular role.

The movie premiered at the Venice Film Festival, as did Wolfs (2024), starring Angelina Jolie’s ex-husband Brad Pitt, while the former couple were in litigation. Festival organisers scheduled the two pictures so the actors would not have to meet.

“Maria” made its world premiere in August 2024 at the Venice Film Festival. Co-stars Alba Rohrwacher, Pierfrancesco Favino, and Valeria Golino (twice) have each won Venice’s top prize for leading actors–the Volpi Cup.
