The 27-year-old, from Dorset, remained unfazed and soon took a sizeable lead on the first down-wind leg. This in front of the scenic shoreline of Marseille in the French seaside city.
The Team GB star managed to hold her nerve and grabbed her country’s first gold in the sailing event of the Olympics.
Aldridge, who won silver at the Olympic test event in 2023, qualified directly for the final after winning her opening race by 23 seconds. Aldridge topped the overall results table with 12 net points alongside the French athlete Lauriane Nolot, who also advanced straight into the final.
Nolot was 17 seconds further back, and a possibel gold had she won just one of the final races due to her two victories in qualifying.
Aldridge’s gold takes Team GB’s medal tally to 50 – and 13th gold – in Paris. This places UK fifth in the overall medal table.
