ACC Lindsey Butterfield revealed this in a statement following the riotous disorder in Rotherham as anti-immigration rioters smashed the windows of the Holiday Inn Express.
The ACC said: officers were working around the clock to identify people involved in the unrest. Also, 12 police officers injured.
The attacks on the police and the hotel on Sunday were the latest in a weekend of national chaos following last Monday’s fatal stabbing in Southport of three girls.
The Home Office has contracted Mears to house 130 asylum seekers at the hotel since 2022. A report by the South Yorkshire police and crime commissioner said there had been local concerns because the contractor had used the hotel to house single men, and it was opposed by the local Labour MP.
Terrified asylum seekers told how ten rioters marauded through the corridors shouting obscenities at them.
“They came into this floor and hit me until the police drove them away down the corridor”, one migrant told The Times.
Another, a 55-year-old Palestinian, said he had rocks thrown at his bedroom windows.
