Rachel Reeves cuts winter fuel payments
Chancellor – Millions of pensioners will no longer get winter fuel payments.
Labour government inherited a projected ovrspend of £22bn from the Conservatives. The projected overspend on the asylum system including the Rwanda plan that Labour has now scrapped was more than £6.4bn for this year alone.
Chancellor – mentioned an above-inflation pay rise for teachers in England understood to be 5.5% backed by an additional £1.2bn in funding.
Jeremy Hunt – denies government knew about public sector pay offers. Hunt says the so-called “black hole” in finance comes from “discretionary public sector pay awards”.
Hunt: The chancellor will fool absolutely no one with a shameless attempt to lay the ground for tax rises she didn’t have the courage to tell us about”.
The chancellor announces immediate cuts worth billions of pounds, aimed at plugging a “black hole” in the public finances, when she addresses Parliament on Monday.
Rachel Reeves’ plans expected to include the cancellation of some road and rail projects, a reduction in spending on external consultants and a drive to cut public sector waste.
She accuses the previous government of “covering up” shortfalls in departmental budgets and then “running away”.
However, the Conservative Party said the chancellor’s message designed to “con the British public” so that she could raise taxes.
A Treasury internal audit of the public finances will be published on Monday. It is expected to show a gap of around £20bn between tax revenues coming in and expected spending.
The chancellor tells Parliament that this requires “immediate action”. This to restore economic stability and “fix the foundations of our economy”.
Projects likely paused or cancelled include: the road tunnel under the Stonehenge world heritage site. Also Boris Johnson’s New Hospital programme.
