Sir Ed Davey suggested senior executives at the Post Office, including Paula Vennells, passed on “untrue” information.
Davey told the inquiry that he now knows “I was being lied to by the Post Office” and “pretty clear” that info told by his officials – “not true”.
Liberal Democrat leader, Sir Ed Davey, MP, gives evidence about why he did not do more to assist sub-postmasters.
Sir Ed Davey MP accused of “fobbing” off Sir Alan Bates the former sub-postmaster. Bates led the fightback against the Post Office, helping to expose the scandal.
The Lib Dem leader rebuffed multiple letters from Bates asking Davey to intervene and investigate the company. Revelations about the communications led to a swell of criticism earlier this year, prompting calls for Davey to resign.
Sir Ed Davey criticised for initially turning down a meeting with Bates in May 2010. Although he became the first minister to see him in October that year.
The chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Pat McFadden MP, gave evidence as well.
Up to 16,000 people contacted this week by researchers commissioned by the Inquiry.
Every current sub-postmaster in the UK will be asked about the experience working with the Post Office and applicants under the Post Office’s in-house compensation scheme (the Horizon Shortfall Scheme) asked about their experiences of this process.
