King’s speech – Labour’s Plans – a grand occasion

King’s speech – State opening of Parliament

The King outlined the new government’s plans at the State Opening of Parliament.

King Charles read out draft laws including plans on nationalising the railways and speeding up the delivery of “high-quality infrastructure and housing”

In a speech written by the government, the King expected to announce up to 40 draft laws.

Laws on illegal migration, housing and planning, workers’ rights, a football regulator, and railway nationalisation on list.

The government set out aims to “modernise” the asylum and immigration system, as well as removing the VAT exemption for private school fees

Sir Keir Starmer says the plans will “take the brakes off Britain”.

In the King’s Speech, there was no specific mention of votes for 16-year-olds, which was in Labour’s manifesto – Labour’s Lucy Powell says she “hopes” they will be able to vote at the next general election

In a day of pomp and ceremony, King Charles traveled from Buckingham Palace to Westminster, before making speech in the House of Lords.

Queen Camilla – who will accompany the King for the state opening – is celebrating her 77th birthday today.

Labour’s Pat McFadden says it is about “getting Britain building again”.

McFadden said the government will look to build on brownfield sites first – old industrial or inner-city sites that have been cleared.

Will you be watching?  It is a grand event with traditional pomp and circumstance.
