Rare WWII Spitfire Fetches Millions
A rare RAF Spitfire found buried in sand on the French coast sold for over £3m, close to $5m and over 4million Euro. Brought back to ‘flight’ and later auctioned by Christie’s in London 9 July, 2015. The unique aircraft flown by a Great Escape veteran. It fetched millions of pounds for charity after it went under the hammer. It was restored to its original flying power by a team at RAF Duxford, Cambridgeshire. The plane one of only two left in the world. Proceeds went to the RAF Benevolent Fund and Oxford University’s Wildlife Conservation Research Unit.
The Mk I Vickers Supermarine Spitfire originally piloted by Old Etonian Flying Officer Peter Cazenove. This during the evacuation of Dunkirk.
Despite radioing-in to say “Tell mother I’ll be home for tea,” he was shot down on 24 May 1940. It crashed on the Calais coast and he captured.
