Pope Leo XIV appeals for no more war in first Sunday address
Pope Leo XIV held his first Regina Caeli prayer in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, is the first U.S.-born pope in the Catholic Church’s 2000-year history.
Pope Leo XIV appealed for “no more war” in a message to world powers during his first Sunday address at the Vatican.
Reflecting on current conflicts, the newly selected pontiff called for a “lasting peace” in the war in Ukraine, a ceasefire in Gaza, and welcomed Saturday’s agreement to end recent hostilities between India and Pakistan.
Leo spoke in Latin, English and Italian, calling on the Church to do more work where there is “lack of faith” and asked cardinals to “announce the good news, to announce the Gospel”.
The new Pope – Robert Prevost – now known as Pope Leo XIV – the first American pontiff elected leader of the Catholic Church.
Later, Prevost, 69, greeted with huge cheers from thousands gathered in St Peter’s Square.
“Peace be with all of you,” said Robert Prevost following unexpected election to the throne of St Peter after only four conclave ballots.
Chicago-born Prevost seen as a reformer and worked for many years a missionary in Peru. This before being made an archbishop in the nation. Pope Leo could put the Catholic Church at odds with the Trump administration.
The crowd chanted “Leone, Leone” and waved American flags. The Pope added: “God wishes us well, God loves you all and evil will not prevail!”
World leaders extended congratulations to Pope Leo XIV. US President Donald Trump called it a “great honour” to have an American pope.
