Vatican: after the Pope’s funeral

A new head of the Catholic Church will soon emerge from behind a red curtain and greet the waiting crowds from the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica.

Francis, hailed as the ‘people’s pope’ due to his focus on society’s neediest, died aged 88 on Monday just hours after greeting crowds to mark Easter.

In his will, he asked to be buried here “in the ground, without particular decoration”.  This near the icon of the Virgin Mary with Jesus as a child.

The Pope lay in state in St Peter’s Basilica for three days.   Some 250,000 mourners passed him day and night, before his coffin was formally sealed in private on Friday, with his face covered by a simple white shroud.

Dignitaries sit on the the right-hand side of the square – facing the Basilica – with the heads of state for Argentina and Italy taking the front seats.

Before the service U.S. President Donald Trump held ‘unofficial’ chat with Volodymyr Zelensky at the funeral.

Pope Francis lay in state for three days in St Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican.

Tens of thousands of mourners filed past the coffin, placed in front of the Papal Altar during the three days of public mourning.

The Pope’s death came a day after he appeared in St Peter’s Square to wish “Happy Easter” to thousands of worshippers.
