Vatican: cardinals prepare to elect next pope
The Vatican has closed the Sistine Chapel, where cardinals will gather for the conclave to elect the next pope. This after the death of Pope Francis.
Pope Francis buried Saturday after a funeral In St Peter’s Square. It gathered world leaders and hundreds of thousands of others. A nine-day period of mourning is continuing before the concalve can start.
A new head of the Catholic Church will soon emerge from behind a red curtain and greet the waiting crowds from the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica.
Francis, hailed as the ‘people’s pope’ due to his focus on society’s neediest, died aged 88 on Monday just hours after greeting crowds to mark Easter.
In his will, he asked to be buried here “in the ground, without particular decoration”. This near the icon of the Virgin Mary with Jesus as a child.
The Pope lay in state in St Peter’s Basilica for three days. Some 250,000 mourners passed him day and night, before his coffin was formally sealed in private on Friday, with his face covered by a simple white shroud.

Tens of thousands of mourners filed past the coffin, placed in front of the Papal Altar during the three days of public mourning.
The Pope’s death came a day after he appeared in St Peter’s Square to wish “Happy Easter” to thousands of worshippers.
