Trump: A New Round of Tariffs
Donald Trump unveils new sweeping tariffs, in what the White House has dubbed as “Liberation Day”.
U.S. President Donald Trump launches the new tariffs. Trump says he will start a “golden age” for America and says it’s time for the US to “prosper”.
The president hits out at major trade partners Canada and Mexico, saying their trade practices are “not fair”.
Reading through a list of tariffs Trump says United Kingdom is 10% – so “it will stay 10%”.
Trump says it’s not too late, and vows to make the US wealthy again.
Trump says tariffs will address “unfair” trade with other countries – a view shared by some US industries – but analysts warn tariffs could push up global prices.
This in a bid to boost U.S. manufacturing that could risk plunging the economy into a downturn and shredding decades-old alliances.
He’ll outline the plans at the White House at 16:00 EST (21:00 BST) – at this stage it’s unclear how high the tariffs could go and exactly which countries could be targeted. Here’s what we know so far
Trump argues the tariffs will help US manufacturers by encouraging consumers to buy American-made goods – but analysts warn it could push up prices and trigger a trade war
Trump’s self-described plan for “reciprocal” tariffs follows new 25% taxes on auto imports and levies against China, Canada and Mexico as well as expanded tariffs on steel and aluminum, all of which are starting to impact expectations of inflation climbing and growth stagnating.
