PMQs: Prime Minister tackled on welfare changes
Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer tackled on the economy and changes to the welfare system.
Tory leader, Kemi Badenoch, began her attack by describing next week’s Spring Statement as an “emergency budget”.
The PM was ready for this and responded by defending Labour’s economic record.
Kemi Badenoch focused on the economy. This before Rachel Reeves’s Spring Statement a week today.
Badenoch called it an “emergency budget”. Treasury sources insist it’s not a Budget — emergency, mini or otherwise — because while we are expecting controversial spending cuts, including the welfare reforms announced yesterday, there will not be significant tax measures.
Tuesday March 18, Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall announced a benefits overhaul aimed at saving £5bn a year by 2030.
But, instead of cheers there are jeers at the proposed changes.
Personal Independence Payments (Pip) is paid to people in England and Wales who have difficulty completing everyday tasks or getting around as a result of a long-term physical or mental health condition.
The eligibility criteria will be tightened up from November 2026, potentially resulting in reduced payments for many.
