John Swinney: foreign aid cuts ‘short sighted’
Scotland’s First Minister hosted his first Bute House news conference.
Swinney challenged during media questions about the decision by Sir Keir Starmer to cut foreign aid in order to spend more on defence.
He replied: “At the start of the year, I warned that failure to pass the budget would send a signal that parliament and politics could not deliver”.
Swinney followed this up by saying the decision to cut aid spending to bolster defence budget is ‘short sighted’.
If we go back to the foundations of the principles of international aid. It is about trying to address the inequality in our world.
The First Minister said: I want us to work together to agree a common approach to asserting the values of our country, to bringing people together and creating a cohesive society where everyone feels at home.”
John Swinney, the first minister of Scotland and admitted he is “very concerned about the rise of far right politics” in the UK.
