PMQs Starmer – Conservatives ‘lost control of immigration’

The first question from Conservative leader, Kemi Badenoch about reports that a Palestinian family granted the right to live in the UK after applying via a scheme designed for Ukrainian refugees.

Prime Minister says he does not agree with the judge’s decision, and accuses Badenoch of not doing her homework.

He says the decision was taken under rules from the last government.

Parliament should make the rules on immigration, he says.

We can’t allow enormous numbers of people to exploit laws in this way, Badenoch hits back.

Will the PM commit to bringing forward new legislation or amending his Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill?

Starmer says the home secretary has a team working on closing the loophole.

He accuses the Conservatives of losing control of immigration when they were last in government.

New guidance states that anyone who enters the UK illegally having made a dangerous journey which could be via boat, but also by means such as hiding in a vehicle, will normally be refused citizenship.  This regardless of the time that has passed.

The Home Office said the strengthened measures made it clear anyone who entered the UK illegally would face having a British citizenship application refused.

But, the change condemned by the Refugee Council and some Labour MPs.  This includes Stella Creasy who said the change “meant refugees would forever remain second class citizens”.
