MPs debate legalising assisted dying – historic occasion
MPs debate legalising assisted dying
The MPs set to debate and vote on whether to legalise assisted dying for the first time in almost a decade.
The divisive issue voted down by MPs in 2015 but it returns to the House of Commons today in what could be a historic moment for the country.
Five hours set aside for MPs to air their views. This on Labour MP Kim Leadbeater’s Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, with a vote due to be held before 2.30pm.
Ms Leadbeater has said she is hopeful the “major social reform” will clear its first hurdle on the long road to becoming law.
MPs have a free vote on an issue of profound social change, an issue of conscience where many have wrestled with questions ranging from morality to practicality.
The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, which would apply to England and Wales. Then what is known as its second reading, which is parliamentary speak for its first Commons debate and vote.
If the bill passes today, there are still many months of parliamentary activity before it becomes a law. If it’s rejected, that’s the end of the road.
