BBC New Comedy Award 2024 goes to Paul Hilleard
Paul Hilleard was handed the prestigious prize at the iconic Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham.
“Sound, innit? Good, nice, yeah.” was his reaction to the big win.
In his set Paul joked about what life is like in the Rhondda Valley and how there are many ‘characters’ in his hometown of Pontypridd. Watch the video for more.
The final show presented by writer, comedian and former New Comedy Award winner, Lucy Beaumont.
Hilleard originates from South Wales and resides in Bristol as “there is no comedy scene in the valleys, just people talking into puddles”. Paul was named as a semi-finalist in Leicester Square Theatre’s New Comedian of the Year in 2023.
The prize includes paid commission to write and perform a 30-minute audio pilot under the mentorship of a BBC comedy commissioner. Also a trophy and £1,000 cash and a slot on the live TV on Red Nose Day in March.
There was a judging panel of six led by Head Judge Babatunde Aléshé.
Last year’s winner, Joe Kent-Walters AKA Frankie Monroe presented the trophy to Paul.
