Tory leadership contender Robert Jenrick says he’s running for the job so that he can ‘serve party, serve the country.’  As leader he could get the Conservatives back into leading the country and knock the socks of Sir Keir Starmer.

Tory leadership contender Robert Jenrick said he ‘stand for change’.

Jenrick says the party has “suffered its worst ever electoral defeat” since 1832. The party “can’t continue with the stale status quo,” he adds.

He has a “diagnosis” of what has gone wrong, he says. He wants to change the party.

“My very firm conviction is that someone’s got to step up and lead this party, lead it back into government.”

Jenrick also determined to change immigration laws.  He says the country needs to have more control on who enters and who stays.

Meanwhile, Rishi Sunak’s “Stop the boats” slogan was an “error”, Conservative leadership contender James Cleverly has said.

The slogan, adopted in January 2023, referred to the then government’s efforts to curb the number of people trying to reach the UK by crossing the English Channel in small boats.

Cleverly, who later used the phrase numerous times when he was home secretary, told a fringe event at the Tory conference in Birmingham it “distilled a very, very complicated and challenging problem into a soundbite”.
