This film was originally going to be directed by Shawn Levy, but he left the project after disagreements with the Minecraft developers as they thought that his idea did not suit the game.

This is the second collaboration between Jack Black and director Jared Hess, after Nacho Libre (2006), released 19 years prior.

While in pre-production UK YouTuber George Mason (catfishing comedian) started and fuelled a rumour about Pedro Pascal starring as Steve.

Kate McKinnon and Jemaine Clement previously appeared together in Super Pets (2022), released approximately three years prior. Interestingly, Clement was the voice of Aquaman in that movie, who has famously portrayed in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) by Jason Momoa, who will be starring alongside McKinnon and Clement in this movie.
