Communities Secretary Michael Gove unveiled a new definition of extremism – as “the promotion or advancement of… violence, hatred or intolerance”.

Gove – no intention to restrict freedom of expression.

He says the new definition will help the government “choose its friends wisely”.

The communities secretary named:  the Muslim Association of Britain, Mend and Cage as groups with “Islamist orientation and beliefs”.  They will be held to account following the launch of a new definition of extremism.

Gove says there would need to be a “rigorous process” with “due diligence” before making that judgement.

Here’s a reminder of the government’s new definition of extremism.

Extremism is “the promotion or advancement of an ideology based on violence, hatred or intolerance, that aims to:

1 – negate or destroy the fundamental rights and freedoms of others; or

2 – undermine, overturn or replace the UK’s system of liberal parliamentary democracy and democratic rights; or

3 – intentionally create a permissive environment for others to achieve the results in (1) or (2).”

Under the new measures, the government plans to publish a list of groups it deemed to be extremist.

The new definition will be used by government officials to cut ties or funding to groups deemed to have crossed a line.

But civil liberties groups, community groups and some MPs have criticised recent government rhetoric on extremism.
